North & South

I have a new favorite movie.

(Okay I have like 70 favorite movies.)

(But here's another one to add to the list.)

It's called North & South.

Apparently it's based on the book of the same name by Elizabeth Gaskell.
It's a BBC series, so it's about 4 hours long.

(But when you have a migraine, what better thing is there to do but watch 4 hour movies?)

It's a brilliant, thought provoking combination of a Jane-Austen-like love story, and a historical drama.

It takes place in England in the mid-nineteenth century and is based around the cotton industry: the factories, the horrible conditions, etc.

It's incredible. I only rented it from the library, but it's definitely going on my list of movies I want to buy... probably at the top actually...

Seriously. You need to watch it. :)

  1. Hi Lindsay,
You have great taste in film...North & South is my favorite film!! I always recommend watching it at least two times through and then read the book by Elizabeth Gaskell. Her 200th anniversary is being celebrated today by the installation of her window pane in the poets corner @ Westminster Cathedral along with other greats of Eng. Lit. I love this film so much that I am involved in a postcard campaign to Masterpiece/PBS requesting that they air it for the US audiences. If you or your readers are interested, just email fans.of.north.and.south@gmail.com and you will receive two postcards, one for mailing & one for your frig!
I'm glad N&S made it on your favorite list! P.
